Cyprus joined the Commonwealth of Nations on March 13, 1961, just after gaining independence. The Commonwealth is a political association of former British colonies and other countries that cooperate on various things such as democracy, development, and international peace. Cyprus’ membership in the Commonwealth reflects its historical ties with the UK during its period as a British colony.
Cyprus became an independent country on August 16, 1960. before their independence, the island had been a British colony since 1878. However, after a long struggle, Cyprus gained its sovereignty through the Zürich and London Agreements, brokered between the UK, Greece, Turkey, and Cypriot leaders. The Republic of Cyprus was established with a constitution that guaranteed power-sharing between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, though this balance has been a source of conflict ever since.
